A small juice bar has popped up on the corner of Alexander Avenue and Douglas Street recently, reminiscent of a classic lemonade stand but offering treats that are fresher, fruitier and more full of flavour.
The Otai stand is the brainchild of Eli Palaimaea from Whakatāne Intermediate, who first shared the traditional refreshing Polynesian beverage with her friends at school – and they loved it.
Not long after, a blue gazebo was set up on the street corner, where an impressive 42 litres of juice was sold within the first hour at $5 for a large cup.

The drink is based on a traditional Tongan recipe that changes daily, using fresh fruit such as mango, pineapple, watermelon, and oranges.
Each batch is carefully sliced, diced, crushed, and poured, ready for customers to enjoy.
A visit to the juice bar on a different day will reveal a whole new flavour combination.
“I love the drink and thought it was a good way to raise money for Christmas,” said Eli
With the rest of her family helping in her entrepreneurial venture, she is already gaining a loyal following.
