Good work Whakatāne District Council for the development of the Peace Street Sponge Reserve.

Innovative ideas such as sponge reserves are globally a highly successful and cost-effective way of managing and cleaning urban water sources before they enter natural bodies of water.  

Plantings do an excellent job of extracting pollutants before they progress further into the ecosystem.

In addition, they look far more attractive than a bare open drain.

A win-win solution. Hopefully more are planned.
