Local checkout star Teri Rangi has taken out the title of Bay of Plenty Regional Checker of the Year in the Foodstuffs North Island competition, earning her a spot among the top 10 checkout operators in the North Island.

Ms Rangi, who works at Pak’N Save Whakatāne, was selected from 95 competitors across the Tauranga region at the regional event held recently at Baycourt in Tauranga.

The competition, now in its 77th year, celebrates speed, accuracy, professionalism, and above all, exceptional customer service.

“I was surprised when I won, I was ready to wrap things up and head home,” said Ms Rangi.

“I won an iPad, and there’s gift cards and Prezzy cards to be won. I just hope it encourages the younger team members to give it a go.”

Despite being at Pak’N Save Whakatāne for only six months, having worked at other supermarkets previously, Ms Rangi’s natural people skills and high standards helped her rise to the top.

Originally from Taranaki, she moved to Whakatāne two years ago.

The regional competition isn’t just about scanning groceries – it’s a full event, with themes, costumes, and a team spirit that makes it a memorable night for all involved. This year’s theme was “All In”, which inspired creative costumes ranging from poker cards to charity mascots.

“Our team of seven dressed up as animals, representing some of the local charity groups that Pak’N Save supports,” Ms Rangi said.

As one of the top 12 finalists in the North Island, Ms Rangi will now be “mystery shopped” over the next few months by independent customer service experts. These undercover shoppers will assess her performance based on engagement, speed, accuracy, and overall customer experience.

Store manager Robert Jones said the team was proud of her achievement.

“Teri stands out because she has such high personal standards. She’s fast, accurate, and professional, always delivering great service with a smile and a calm, positive energy that lifts the whole team.”

The overall Foodstuffs North Island Checker of the Year will be announced at the Excellence Awards in June 2026.

Ms Rangi encourages others working in checkout roles to give the competition a try.

“Just let your manager know you’re interested.

“The more that enter, the better the experience for everyone.”
